DACHSER takes on procurement logistics for Metro MGL
At the end of January, DACHSER took on the entire range of national procurement activities for MGL METRO Group Logistics GmbH in the dry foods segment. Apart from the MGL central warehouses, DACHSER is now also delivering goods to the branches of the Metro Cash & Carry, Real, Extra, Galeria Kaufhof and C+C Schaper outlets, as well as to the Praktiker DIY stores.
“Nothing to report” – that would be a fair summary of the last week in January 2008 at DACHSER. And this despite the fact that DACHSER had assumed responsibility overnight for Metro’s procurement logistics in the non-refrigerated and temperature-controlled food segments (+12 to +18°C).
The actual launch had been preceded by three months of preparations, crammed full with countless internal coordination meetings and hundreds of talks with suppliers. After all, the goal was ambitious: to ensure that the supply data management and operational procedures at both the consignor and consignee ends of the chain were clearly defined, so that a high level of service could be provided from day one.
The fact that the launch succeeded in record time and virtually without any hitches is due not least to the dispatch guidelines prepared by MGL. These set out uniform procedures for the organization of transport processes between MGL and its suppliers, prescribing standardized processes for all parties involved.

Retail logistics at DACHSER
Retail logistics is one of DACHSER’s strategic segments. For many years now, the company has been very successfully implementing its Category Logistics concept in the DIY sector. Once the trend towards retailer-led procurement seemed to have fully taken hold in the food segment, too, DACHSER Food Logistics adapted its systems and capacities long-term to this customer group. However, it did so under the proviso that these processes should complement rather than impair the still dominant free domicile activities.
Since 2005, DACHSER Food Logistics has been distributing goods not just on behalf of its customers, but also on behalf of and for the account of a number of food retailers. The company’s acquisition of Metro as a new key retail customer is another milestone in the implementation of the strategy.
