Picture gallery: A house travels the globe

The Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt puts up a building next to the White House – DACHSER Air & Sea Logistics handles the transport

The technical university in the German city of Darmstadt was one of just two European universities to qualify for the international “Solar Decathlon” building competition staged by the US energy ministry. In October, the university pitched itself in Washington D.C. against twenty teams from other international universities with its entry, a building prototype powered exclusively by solar energy.

The TU’s concept impressed the jury in a number of categories – architecture, level of appointment, comfort, warm water supply and energy generation – and took first place in the competition.

The TU Darmstadt had commissioned DACHSER to handle all the transport for the project. The company’s sea freight professionals coordinated all the service providers involved in the project throughout the entire logistics chain, from loading, shipping and customs clearance all the way through to return transport. During the transport process, DACHSER staff were permanently on hand to keep an eye on the house.
