Educational aid programme provides self-help support

In 2005, DACHSER and the children’s aid organization terre des hommes launched a joint aid project in one of the most populous and poorest regions of India.

Up to 2010, the company is making EUR 100,000 available each year to the Varansi and Sitapur regions in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh to provide primary schooling for 7,000 children. This is what DACHSER and terre des hommes achieved in 2007:

  • 2,267 children signed up at support centres in the region. That is twice as many as planned.

  • Another 2,256 were integrated into state schools.

  • 70% of the schools in the project area are participating in the “Go to school” campaign, which aims to promote school attendance among children.

  • 110 girls learned a skilled craft. 30 of them found regular employment as seamstresses after their training and now earn their own living.

  • Parents have in the meantime developed a greater awareness for the importance of schooling for girls as well as boys. This is reflected by the behaviour of girls and boys in schools.
