Norway sharpens controls on wood packaging materials
From the beginning of the year, Norway has begun imposing stricter controls on wood packaging governed by the international ISPM 15 regulations. The import regulation for wood packaging to Norway was introduced on 1 January 2008.
The IPPC standard ISPM No. 15 for wood packaging defined phytosanitary treatment and inspection measures to reduce the risk of introduction and/or spread of quarantine pests associated with wood packaging material. Wood packaging material must be treated in accordance with ISPM No. 15; for example, heated to a wood core temperature of 56°C for a minimum of 30 minutes. This is certified by a mark on the wood packaging.
On europallets, this mark can be found in the burn-in marks on both central blocks of the long or the short side. Methyl bromide (MB) fumigation is prohibited for europallets.
The respective consignor is responsible – without any duty to inspect on the part of DACHSER – for ensuring that the above requirements are met. Consequently, only treated and correspondingly marked wood packaging material may be consigned to DACHSER for shipments with Norway as their destination.
Packaging that is not marked as required may be sent back at the consignor’s expense. Furthermore, the consignor concerned will be expected to bear any further costs incurred as a result.
